Ibusuki is a hot spring town located in the southeast of Kagoshima Prefecture, at the bottom of Kyushu. What is very unique about Ibusuki is "sunamushi," which can't be found anywhere else in the world.

Sunamushi is a special way of taking a bath: On the beach in Ibusuki there is a stretch of sand about one kilometre long which is naturally heated by a hot spring. Here you can lie face up on the hot sand and be buried so it covers everything but your head. The sand is heated to around 50°C to 55°C and has a sauna type affect, which is said to aid detoxification, improve blood circulation, and has been medically proven to have health benefits.
