We have a signed copy of photographer Gerard Touren's book of Tokyo street photography to give away to one lucky SeeJapan reader!

After great success at venues in France, Gerard Touren’s photography exhibition of images of Tokyo is finally coming to London. The exhibition will show an assortment of Touren’s photographs of the Japanese capital, with a double selection that puts the emphasis on both the subject and the technical quality of the image, thereby bridging the gap between cultures.

Speaking about his experience of shooting the images featured in the exhibition, the photographer recalls:

In the streets of Tokyo, I did my best to engage with a population so different from all that I knew until then, and to spontaneously overcome the potential distance between me and my subjects, without compromising my quest for the “unusual” and “light” in my images. I did not fully manage to ‘erase’ this distance, as the respect of rules and the “other” prevail above all else for Tokyoites. Every single one of them, while moving in an incredibly conformed flow, appear like a solitary fragment of an expanding whole in constant motion, ignoring a confusing mix of lighting, audible announcements and flashing signs... hardly noticing the camera of a lost and unlikely westerner.

Following successful showings in Les Rencontres d’Arles in July 2016 and Sway Gallery Paris in June 2017, the Paris-based photographer’s collection of atmospheric colour and black and white photographs taken in Tokyo is finally coming to the British capital.

The exhibition will run at Sway Gallery London (address: 70-72 Old Street, EC1V 9AN, London) from 15-28 March, 2018. Opening hours Mon-Fri 11am-7pm, with weekend viewings by appointment only. The exhibition is free to enter.

If you want to get in ahead of the crowds, then don’t miss the private opening viewing on Thu 15 March, 2018. This event is free to attend, however to avoid disappointment it is recommended to book your space via Eventbrite:
