Trunk Clothiers x Ichizawa Hanpu Popup Event
Drop into Trunk LABS on Thursday 21st September for a special event to celebrate the launch of Trunk Clothiers and Ichizawa Hanpu’s special collaboration tote bag.
Recognise the trademark bright colours and simple design? Beloved of students and company workers all over Japan, Ichizawa Hanpu have been making their iconic canvas cotton bags for over one hundred years since way back in 1905.
Thanks to their durability and clear design, Ichizawa’s bags have served many purposes over the decades, proving popular with tradesman such as carpenters, errand boys and milkmen before being used for Navy parachute bags and hammocks during the war. In later years, they became the brand of choice for mountain climbers, being used for mountaineering goods such as Kissling rucksacks, until they were eventually superseded by modern synthetic fibres.
These days, Ichizawa’s products have found new life as contemporary fashion statements, while maintaining their rich history of Japanese quality and craftsmanship. At the Ichizawa workshop, a two-person team tackle the task of producing each bag by hand. The expert is in charge of the sewing machine, while the apprentice is in charge of marking out the material and attaching the metal parts to finish each bag. On average, it takes around ten years for an apprentice to progress to expert level.
About the Collaboration Tote Bag
As well as the collaboration tote, Trunk x Ichizawa have also produced two designs of canvas pouches (small and medium) and a zip closure pen case, continued in the same three navy, olive or yellow hues and complete with the collaboration label. All the collaboration items are 100% cotton canvas and made in Kyoto, Japan.
About the Popup Event
To celebrate the collaboration, Trunk LABS in London is hosting a special event on Thursday 21st September, 2017. Kaori Ichizawa and Sachie Sone from Ichizawa Hanpu will be in store, showcasing the collaboration as well as a wider range of products from Ichizawa’s Kyoto store.
There will also be a selection of teas from Postcard Tea served throughout the day. They make over 60 varieties of tea to suit every palate, from black, green and white to oolong, puerh and stonerolled teas.
