Hello Kitty Pop-Up at Tombo Fitzrovia
Say “Hello!” to Hello Kitty at Tombo, Fitzrovia, with a new pop-up themed on everyone’s favourite Japanese cat for six weeks from September.
It’s a little-known fact that Hello Kitty was born in London in 1974. Since then, Sanrio’s diminutive white cat seems to have been firmly resident in Japan, unveiling her plan for total global domination from there, but if she were to visit the British capital today, what sort of places might she visit?
As fellow lovers of all things hailing from Japan, surely Tombo Japanese café in Fitzrovia would be top of her list? And in fact that’s exactly where you’ll be able to find her this autumn, as she takes up residence at the Japanese Poké bowl and matcha specialist for six weeks from 1st September until 8th October.
At the exclusive Hello Kitty themed popup, devotees of Sanrio’s foremost feline can devour their favourite cat character in the form of several Hello Kitty-inspired menu items, such as a special poke bowl, ice cream sundaes, cupcakes and other desserts, as well as Tombo’s signature matcha drinks.
Admirers of the little white cat can also expect to find a wide range of Hello Kitty merchandise on sale, including tote bags, postcards and posters all featuring special edition artwork designs of tea picker and tea ceremony Hello Kitty.
A range of bespoke Tombo-meets-Hello-Kitty tea will also be available, including a matcha latte mix, ceremonial grade matcha tins, and a new flavour of Kukicha green tea infused with yuzu, a popular Japanese citrus fruit which is rich in antioxidants.
Tombo’s Fitzrovia outlet opened its doors earlier this year in July, following on from the success of its outlets in South Kensington and Soho. A Japanese-British family run affair, Tombo should be firmly on your radar if you’re a fan of modern Japanese cuisine. They specialise in Japanese-style poke sushi bowls, offering a fun and fuss-free way to get your sushi fix in London, as well as green tea imported specially from their private tea estate in Shizuoka, transformed into a variety of mouth-watering beverages and desserts.
Fans of Hello Kitty needn’t worry if they can’t make it down to Fitzrovia - Tombo’s two other outlets in South Kensington and Soho will also be stocking a range of Hello Kitty merchandise and offering a selection of the limited-edition menu items too.
Since her birth in the 1970s, Hello Kitty has become a global phenomenon, spawning a range of merchandise, cafes and even her own aeroplane! Her appeal transcends both age and culture and she has inspired countless artists, designers and cat fans over the last forty-three years. Tombo’s pop-up is the ideal way for Londoners to sample a slice of Japanese pop culture or enter the cuddly world of Hello Kitty without having to hop on a plane to Japan this autumn, so what are you waiting for - get on down to Tombo Fitzrovia for your meeting with the world’s most popular puss!To stay up to date with all the latest happenings in Japan follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
