Number of Foreign Visitors to Japan in 2016 Surpasses 20 Million

November 02, 2016

The number of foreign visitors to Japan this year has surpassed 20 million, the highest number to date, according to an announcement by JNTO today, 2 November 2016.

According to statistics by JNTO, the number of foreign visitors to Japan this year up until October 30 totalled 20,050,000 people, safely passing the 20 million mark. These results clearly show that Japan is well on track to meet the target set by the Japanese government to welcome 40 million visitors by 2020, when it will host the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The figures are based on independent estimates by Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) with the cooperation of the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) of Japan. Figures for total visitor numbers for October 2016 as well as preliminary figures for each market are expected to be announced on 16 November.

President of JNTO, Ryoichi Matsuyama, expressed his warm thanks to everyone who has lent their support and cooperation to promotion of inbound tourism to Japan, especially the Visit Japan project, which has helped to reach this milestone of 20 million foreign visitors to Japan.

With the government’s ambitious target of 40 million visitors by 2020 still to be reached, he also expressed JNTO’s determination to work toward the further development of inbound tourism to Japan by strengthening ties with the Japan Tourism Agency and its other partners and related organizations in order to boost the number of foreign visitors heading to increasingly diverse destinations throughout Japan and ensure they enjoy discovering unique aspects of Japanese culture.

Japan’s position as a top travel destination was recently confirmed by trusted travel magazine Condé Nast, whose readers ranked Tokyo and Kyoto no.1 and 2 in the World’s Best Cities category in their Readers’ Choice Awards 2016 (read about it here). Monocle magazine also declared Tokyo the most liveable and convenient city in the world in their 2016 awards earlier this year (read about it here).

With one of the lowest crime rates of any country in the world, astonishing levels of service and hospitality, and world-class cuisine at extremely economical prices, Japan provides an ideal combination of affordability, peace of mind and memorable experiences.
