Japanese New Year is called “Oshougatsu” and refers to the period starting from 1st through 3rd January, which is considered a national holiday in most parts of Japan.

Two traditions synonymous with Oshogatsu in Japan are hatsumode and osechi ryori.

 * Hatsumode is the first visit to temples and shrines after midnight of 31st December through beginning of January to wish for good luck in the new year.
